About Jump-Start's Education Programs

You have provided our students with realistic and meaningful role models; you have also shared a body of work and consciousness that has workable relevance for young people; you have given meaning to the word artist.
- Beva Sánchez-Padilla, Teacher, G.W. Brackenridge High School

Jump-Start’s educational mission reads:

Jump-Start Performance Co.’s Arts Education Program builds long-term collaborations with schools, organizations, youth and other community members. We believe that teaching multi-disciplinary arts techniques and critical thinking skills nurtures mutual respect and individual creativity, effecting dynamic change in our community.

Educational exchange with the community has always been a major goal of Jump-Start, and has included long-term residency programs at local public schools, specific programs working with various populations, community workshops and adult classes. Since 1990, Jump-Start has provided arts programming to over 100,000 individuals, working with over 80 different schools and community groups, including Ella Austin Community Center, Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center, Dwyer Center, Grupo Animo, Boys and Girls Clubs, Alamo Children’s Advocacy Center, YMCA, YWCA, San Antonio Housing Authority, Frank Tejeda Academy and numerous other schools and organizations.

Jump-Start relies on the resources of its artistic company to provide an integrated arts approach. The program’s instructors are master artists and develop a long-term affiliation with the program sites, creating an in-depth community partnership.

Jump-Start’s educational programming has received funding from Bank One, Boeing, Brackenridge Foundation, Office of Cultural Affairs, City of San Antonio, DPT Laboratories, Ford Salute to Education, Huth Coates Foundation, King William Association, Levi Strauss Foundation, Lowe Foundation, Alice Kleberg Reynolds Meyer Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Pacific Gas and Electric, San Antonio Area Foundation, SBC, Target Stores, Texas Commission on the Arts, Valero Energy Corporation, Zachry Foundation, members and individual donors.

Jump-Start Performance Co.’s education programs are tailored to specific populations, sites, or communities. Other projects are either in development or available on a short-term basis. Please contact Steve Bailey, Education Director, for more information about any of these programs.
